How long have you been in business?
Potomac Tutors opened its doors in August 1993. www.potomactutors.com We began offering our Exam Review Classes in 1997. www.potomacprep.com
What is your primary product or service?
One to one tutoring in Math, Science, English, History, Foreign Languages, Standardized Test Prep (SAT, ACT, SSAT, ISEE, MCPS Exam Review Classes; homeschool support.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
From the owner: I have always been interested in education. I began helping others with schoolwork while in elementary school; both college and law school gave me experience teaching in front of, and being responsible for, class sizes of 12-16 students. In my early career with an environmental non-profit group I was drawn to teaching and training responsibilities. When the opportunity arose to buy Potomac Tutors from its founder, a friend from Smith College, I couldn't turn it down. It's also in the family blood -- among my 8 siblings, four are teachers.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Tutors meet with students in our convenient home-like tutoring center. Among both staff and students there is a collegial, friendly environment which provides the comfort and relaxation necessary to foster maximum learning. The personal connection
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We currently have space in Potomac, MD and have recently begun to service the Germantown area.
Provide detailed directions to your location
You'll find us in Potomac Village, at the intersection of Falls Road (MD Rt. 189) and River Road (MD Rt. 190). We are in the Safeway shopping center at the back of the courtyard next to Starbucks. The door to the left of River Falls Seafood will lead you up the stairs to our space. At the top of the stairs, turn right and we are the first door on your right.
In Germantown, we are at 19929 Sweetgum Circle.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept payment by credit card (Visa or Mastercard) or by check. Credit card payments are given a $30 discount.

Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The company is owned and operated by Kathryn E. McLane.
What are your hours of operation?
Standard hours are M-Th 2:30 to 10 pm. Friday and Sunday by appointment. We also work with homeschooled students in the mornings.
