The National Christ Child Society is a non-profit organization
The National Christ Child Society is a non-profit organization of members dedicated to service to children in need, for love of the Christ Child.
The National Christ Child Society has been continually serving children in need for more than 125 years. Organized by chapters throughout the United States, our 6,000 plus members reach out to teach, motivate, and care for young children in need and to mentor young parents. Although our guiding mission is the same, the programs run by each chapter are unique and changing as they are created to best respond to the specific needs within each community where a chapter is located.
Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
We have been in business for nearly 130 years. Mary Virginia Merrick started the Christ Child Society in 1887 in Washington, D.C., by providing layettes for babies born at Christmastime. Though confined to a wheel chair, she resolved to do something every day for the Christ Child and encouraged family and friends to join her efforts. As a result, the mission spread and chapters formed across the nation.
What is your primary product or service?
Each Christ Child Society chapter tailors its efforts to meet the needs of its local community, following Mary Virginia Merrick's directive to "find a need and fill it." Our Layette program provides baby essentials, books and parenting information to over 30,000 infants and their parents nationwide each year. Our outreach programs focus on supplementing education, strengthening families or providing other resources basic to a child's security, comfort and success.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Our founder Mary Virginia Merrick started this organization in 1887 and her mission was to help children in need. We continue the work throughout the country in 44 cities. Each Chapter has a program to help new mothers clothe their newborn infants and other programs that are individual to their communities. Some help with reading programs, backpacks filled with items for children who need to be moved from their home situation, parenting education, crib clubs. Chapter outreach programs include: Reading enrichment for preschool children - Tutoring for elementary and middle school children - Parenting education classes - Leadership, self-esteem, Wellness and empowerment training - Basic needs support including new clothing, school supplies and toys.
